Flagstaff Quick Review – Beaver Street Brewery and Strombolli’s

We spent the weekend in Flagstaff and while my goal was to try our New Jersey Pizza Company, fate dealt that idea a fatal blow.
So, we’ll run a couple quick “unofficial” Pizza Locust reviews of the pizza I did eat.
Beaver Street Brewery

On Saturday we stopped in at the Beaver Street Brewery at the recommendation of my British friend who doesn’t seem to understand that the word “brewery” and “restaurant” aren’t necessarily synonymous; however, in this case, the Beaver Street Brewery is a nice restaurant, and too my delight, they served pizza.
It isn’t their primary food, and they don’t appear to build custom pizzas, so I went with their three-sausage pizza, which also has caramelized onions and mushrooms. (I had them keep the mushrooms back in the dark cellar where they belong rather than putting them on my pizza. I’m just doing my part for ecology.)
It was a thin-crust pizza, rather underdone, but they were very busy while we were there and that might be an excuse. Crust, sauce and cheese were flavorful but not extraordinary. The sauge was pretty good, but one of the three was more of a summer sausage, which was an unusual flavor on pizza. Not necessarily bad, just different.
If you’re at the Beaver Street Brewery, don’t hesitate to try their pizza. I’m told they have beer, too, but that’s not not my scene.
Strombolli’s

Rather a bit in desperation on Sunday afternoon, we found ourselves at Strombolli’s when we discovered our primary objective (New Jersey Pizza Co.) closed.
It’s more of an Italian place than a pizzeria and the others in our party mostly had pasta dishes and minestrone, but I had a pizza and I wasn’t too impressed. It’s adequate, but entirely on par with Domino’s or Pizza Hut.
It seemed like nice folks working in the place, so I’d choose them over the faceless, soulless mega-chains, but not because I was in any way excited about the pizza.
James had a pizza, which was shaped like a fish – that was kind of cute.

I thought New Jersey Pizza Co. has been closed for years. Maybe its always closed when I drive by. I think it’s gone…
You should try Oregano’s and Picazzo’s – they are both AZ companies…

We arrived in two cars. I missed it the first time because it looked like an abandoned building and when the second car pulled up they commented that the place looked deserted for years.
It did rather look derelict, but at the same time, I looked in the door and there seemed to be food in the refrigerated case.
Their website is still there, but might be derelict, too. http://pizzaflagstaff.com/
As for Oregano’s and Picazzo’s – they have them both in the Phoenix area and I’ve been to them – which I why I was looking for something local only to Flagstaff.
Oh well – the best laid plans of mice and locusts…

If you want some really good local pizza that just screams Flagstaff, you might Fratelli Brothers and NiMarcos Pizza. NJ Pizza Co. is definitely fantastic but Fratelli and NiMarco’s are definitely staples to Flagstaff locals!. Fratelli can be found on Phoenix Ave in downtown Flag. It’s one block south of the tracks and down about 100 yards off of Beaver Street. NiMarco’s is right of Beaver Street just past Beaver Street Brew.
Enjoy!
