Mamma Mia – New Location

For the last few weeks, I’ve been noticing a “Tony’s Mamma Mia Express” restaurant just off 7th street and Indian School. It’s in a small, old complex that has housed several restaurants over the years, including the original Fry Bread House.

Each time I pass it, I think, this has got to be the same place as Mamma Mia Brick Oven Pizza (see previous review here) which is over on the east side of Phoenix near my office.

Today I stopped in for a slice of pizza for lunch and I can confirm that this is the same “Mamma Mia” in a second location. I confirmed that with the guy making the pizzas, who I recognized from the other location.

The original Mamma Mia’s website makes just a passing mention of them as of this posting, but the menu is basically the same, if not identical, and the restaurants are about the same size – small, with only seating for about 8 people. The new location doesn’t have fountain drinks.

I only had a slice which, being a re-heated piece off a large pizza, doesn’t qualify as a proper review sampling, but it tasted fine to me, and this new location is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

I got there at the wrong time today to have any, but they also have their “pinwheels” which I’ve had at the other location and are really good. These are sort of pizza/calone things twisted up in a sort of pinwheel shape. If you’re there at lunch try them. They’re inexpensive and good.

They are just close enough to the Locust Caveâ„¢ that we’ll be able to pick one up and bring it home without being too long out of the oven to disqualify it for review in the near future.

In the meantime, welcome to the neighborhood! If anyone else has eaten at both places, let me know how you think they compare.
