Pizza Week ‘07 Roundup

And so Pizza Week 2007 comes to a close. This year we consumed 8 pizzas in 7 days and managed to hit five of the so-called “top 10″ from AOL City Guide and what have I learned.

Well, for starters, I’ve reaffirmed my conviction that you can’t rate pizza by any democratic means. I’ve eatned at eight of the top 10 restaurants and I daresay that I doubt very many of the people who “voted” for the best pizza have eaten in even half as many.

The editors at City Guide choose the pool of restaurants to be voted on and, not surprisingly, the restaurants that have the most locations or can handle the highest capacity of visitors came in at the top (Oregano’s and Nello’s.)

Patsy Grimaldi’s came in third in the voting, but it was clear from their other other articles that they consider it to be the best in town. And they are right. It probably is the best pizza in town at this time. (Look at their “Top 13″ in the country and notice that only Patsy Grimaldi’s made the list.)

Here’s a quick summary of Pizza Week ‘07

Sauce: Very, very thin crust – almost cheese-crip like. Tasty, but only for thin crust fans.
Z Pizza: This was a big surprise, despite being billed as a low-fat, healthy pizza, this thin crust pie was pretty good.
Ray’s Pizza: Ray’s has been a long time favorite in this town and I still can’t figure out why. Extremely greasy and pedestrian.
Patsy Grimaldi’s: The best of the bunch. So good we went back a second time, but the second wasn’t quite fully cooked. Will go again.
Nello’s: Had a very unsatisfactory thin-crust pizza on this visit. The flavor of the sausage was just plain wrong and thin-crust was excessively dry. Don’t write this one off just yet, have had many better pizzas there in the past.
Pie Zano’s: All the appeal of a Lunchable’s pizza, cooked in a toaster oven.
Picazzo’s: Looks great, tastes so-so.

Once again it is time for Salad Week ‘07.
