Pizza Hut Express

Pizza Hut Express

If there’s one thing that can truly be said about Pizza Hut that is that they are ubiquitous. With over 12,500 worldwide units they dwarf the next nearest competitor’s 7,900 units. (Dominos). Source: Pizza Today Magazine

The may be “America’s Favorite Pizza” by sheer numbers, but do they make a good pizza?

In this case, we’re actually reviewing Pizza Hut Express, a subset of the Pizza Hut chain. They started out with the likes of airport locations serving a limited location and have rapidly branched out into both standalone stores and combo stores in Taco Bells or other restaurants owned by the same conglomerate. (Taco Bell, KFC, Long John Silvers and A&W)

The Express locations generally have a very limited subset of pizzas, often only a series of personal pan pizza value meals, combining the 6″ pizza with 3 breadsticks and a drink.

In this case, the Pizza Hut Express was located inside a Taco Bell, so the review pizza was a Personal Pan Pepperoni (with breadsticks and a drink)

There’s not a lot to say about this pizza. I was fortunate that it was very fresh, which is not the most common state of affairs at a PHE. All their pizzas are pre-prepared and have a sticker on them that says something like “After 7:45PM Ask for fresh product”. If they have to bother putting the sticker on there, it’s not fresh enough.

When they are fresh, they’re not bad for a pan pizza. The crust is light and flavorful, with just a hint of butter. The toppings are unremarkable, but passable.

When the pizzas are old, though, they’re pretty hard to eat.

Recommended, just. Only when fresh.
Honestly, I like their breadsticks better - but only if they are fresh, too.
