Manhattan Pizzeria & Sub Shop - Review
As promised, I got around to trying the pizza again at Manhattan Pizzeria & Subs.
As described in my previous article, I’ve been eating subs at Manhattan for years, but rarely had the opportunity to eat their pizza. My recollection was only eating the pizza once, but the person I ate with today remembered us eating a pizza there some 15 years ago. I’m sorry to say that may have meant that the experience was less than memorable.
Manhattan’s smallest pizza is 12″, making it too large for one person (me anyway) to eat comfortably, which is why I split this pizza with someone else.
The whole family who run the restaurant were there tonight. I think they were celebrating someone’s birthday and may or may not have impacted the pizza. It wasn’t obvious if it did.
One of the reasons I like to eat smaller pizzas for review is that it reflects more favorably on the restaurant. Smaller pizzas are more likely to be cooked throughout. By the time you reach one of those 18″ monsters, you can be guaranteed that the center will be limp and soggy.
The 12″ pizza we had was well cooked, and the slices could almost be held without kinking them, which is pretty good for a pizza that size.
We requested parmesan cheese (normally, I don’t cheese-up a review pizza) and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that we were given freshly grated parmesan cheese. I haven’t seen that in a long time.
It should come as no surprise that Manhattan’s pizza is the classic New York variety. My initial impression was that the sauce was too sweet. It was overpowering the cheese and pepperoni. The addition of the fresh parmesan helped a lot by adding back a bite that countered the sweetness.
The crust was somewhat dry and without much flavor, particularly around the outer edge.
Overall the pizza is unremarkable and I’m going to have to say that I prefer their sub sandwiches, which I highly recommend (I’m particularly fond of the #10, Skyliner) over their pizza.
Cost per square inch: $0.08
Conclusion: Go with the subs
